Nooneyetknowshowthebutterfliesdoit,butTaylor'sresearchrevealsthattheyareexpertnavigators.Inoneexperiment,hetransportedMexico-boundmonarchsfromKansastoWashington,DC,andthensetthemloose.Atfirst,theyflewsouthasiftheywerestillinKansas—acoursethatfromWashingtonwouldmissMexicoentirely.Butafterafewdays,theycorrectedtheirflightpath,asifsomeinbornGPSunithadalertedthemtothetruedirectionoftheirdestination.
Inanothersequence,NOVAaccompaniescelebratedmonarchwatcherBillCalvertaroundbackcountryTexasashelooksforsignsofthemonarchmigration.Sureenough,theyshowupenmasseandontime,headingtowardtheSierraMadremountainsacrosstheborder—thelastlegoftheirflight.
AndintheMexicanstateofMichoacán,NOVAjoinsmountainvillagersastheycelebratethearrivalofthemonarchsinthefirstweekofNovember.Thebutterflies'arrivalmarksthestartofacelebrationcalledtheDayoftheDead,sincethelocalpeoplehavetraditionallyassociatedthemonarchswiththereturningsoulsoftheirdepartedancestors.
Unfortunately,illegalloggingintheMexicanbutterflysanctuariesthreatenstheuniquehabitatthatmonarchsdependonfortheirsurvival.Monarchsmaynotyetbeanendangeredspecies,buttheirannualmigrationisanendangeredphenomenonthatcoulddwindletoinsignificanceifthegiantfirsthattheyclingtoduringthewinterdisappear.
