TheKansasTerritoryisbloodstainedandwar-torn,avictimofJohnBrown'srelentlesscrusadeagainstslavery.Meanwhile,RaderhasenlistedasamercenaryinBrown'sarmy,whichhasbeenterrorizingthecountrysidewithbloodyraids.DuringBrown'sattackonafreightwagonundertheprotectionoftheU.S.Army,StuartandCustercaptureBrown'sinjuredsonJason,andbeforedying,thetroubledboyinformsthemabouthisfather'shideoutatShubelMorgan'sranchinPalmyra.Indisguise,StuartridesintoPalmyra,thecenteroftheUndergroundRailroad,butisrecognizedbyRader,whotakeshimatgunpointtoBrown(RaymondMassey).Whiletryingtoescape,StuartistrappedinaburningbarnbutissavedasCusterleadsthecavalrytotherescueanddrivesBrownintoseclusion.
BelievingthatBrown'sforcehasbeenbroken,StuartandCusteraresentbacktoWashington,D.C.,whereStuartproposestoKit.However,farfrombeingdefeated,BrownisplanningtoignitewarbyraidingthearsenalatHarper'sFerry,Virginia.WhenBrownrefusestopayRaderforhisservices,RaderridestoWashingtontoalertStuartofBrown'splans,andthetroopsarrivejustintimetocrushtherebellionandhangBrown.
